Hi Lauren. I see this is a two year old old post, so I am quite late to the party. But I happened to be passing by and wanted to make the comment: Your analysis is good, but I would hope you'd give your students a follow-up thought experiment, i.e., what is the legacy of Athens and Sparta? What are the fruits in Western civilization born of the seeds of each of these ways of life?

If a python large enough to eat you did attack... You would be glad that it didn't try to constrict you because you would never get out of it. Those teeth are also a concern. If it has to bite you to hold you; you are going to be in even worse shape. So letting it swallow you knee so that you can knife it in the head once it is distracted is you best option. Snakes also go into a "trance" while feeding that will leave his defenses down. If it comes out of the trance (say from being stabbed in the mouth or head) it will spit you out and probably run away. Sorry to take the humor out of it for you. But if you are someone who never plans to go where you could encounter a huge snake then I guess it's funny.
